Few other American cities have retained so many architecturally interesting and important pre-World War II buildings, most in wonderful neighborhoods, convenient to shopping. No other American city of its size can match San Francisco's excitement, intellectual ferment, and sophistication, yet remaining an easy and fun place to live, combined with normally good weather.

It is an expensive city, but living in San Francisco is probably as close to a European living experience as you will find in America. Ian Berke has long had a great love and appreciation of older buildings, and specializes in architecturally interesting properties: Victorians, Edwardians, the 20's revival styles, Mediterraneans, Deco, Moderne, and others.

He has studied architectural history in many East Coast cities and in Europe. He trained and worked as a civil engineer, restored three Victorian homes, and has been an active leader in neighborhood preservation groups. Ian has been a real estate broker here for over 25 years, and has a proven track record of high quality service, careful negotiation, savvy marketing, and satisfied clients.
Services
Use the San Francisco Association of Realtors Multiple Listing Service (SF MLS) to search for properties.
Only those listings noted as "active" or "active: continue to show" are searchable.
The later are included because there are still major contingencies yet to be satisfied, but are often functionally unavailable.
Those listings pending or closed will not show.
Some properties may be in contract yet still shown as active because the agent is either concerned about the deal or simply lazy regards reporting.
Until recently, the rental market in San Francisco continued to be strong with good properties renting easily.
But there is a sizeable inventory, and the economic slowdown seems to be having an effect on rents as well.
The SOMA area has been especially hard hit, with many landlords offering incentives.
By all means use the free searches first, before paying a rental access fee to an agency.
Unless you do not have a car, think carefully before renting something without a parking space.
Parking is a real headache in this city, and street parking is usually difficult.
Is there a more beautiful city than San Francisco?
Probably not.
We sit, squeezed into a green thumb of hills that roll (sometimes literally) to the Pacific Ocean at the west, the Bay at the east and to the north, the fabled vineyards of Napa and Sonoma.
For those of us lucky enough to live here, San Francisco is as beautiful and vital a city as can be found anywhere in the world.
We have the views of Sydney, the hills of Rome, the arts of New York (well, not quite!), the outdoor variety of Denver, and a culinary superiority that makes San Francisco the choice of Bon Appetit readers for best food city year after year.
Ian Berke has been a real estate broker in San Francisco since 1975, and specializes in midrange ($600K to $4 million) architecturally interesting residential properties.
He is a founding member of the Real Estate Roundtable, was on the SF Association of Realtors' Professional Standards Committee, and does expert witness work.
His engineering degree and experience have been very useful, as well as his long standing love and knowledge of architectural history.
He was on the board of Pacific Heights Residents Association for many years and remains active in neighborhood issues and historic preservation.
San Francisco has long been known for some of the best food in America.
This has been because of our wonderful mix of ethnicities, our agricultural bounty, and the philosophy of pioneers like Alice Waters (of Chez Panisse), who thirty years ago, realized that the best cooking is done with fresh seasonal and very local ingredients.
It is no exaggeration to say that Ms. Waters changed the way many cook and eat in America.
Her acolytes now cook in many great San Francisco restaurants, and she encouraged small farmers to produce varieties that are never seen in supermarkets.
