The railroad in question was the El Paso & Northwestern Railroad owned by Charles B. Eddy.
Eddy influenced the design of Alamogordo, which included wide thoroughfares & tree-lined irrigation canals.
The city's name was derived from the cottonwood tree, as "Alamo Gordo" literally means "fat cottonwood" in Spanish.
This was the only nuclear test to ever take place at this location.
Average high temperatures in Alamogordo climb up to 93 degrees Fahrenheit in June, and the average lows drop as low as 28 degrees in December.
