I am a real estate professional who specializes in accessible homes, Universal Designed homes, and "age in place" homes in the Raleigh, Cary, Durham, Chapel Hill, RTP areas of North Carolina.
My goal is to be a resource to the whole disability community in the Triangle and to develop a network of other specialized Realtors everywhere so I can refer you to someone who can help you find an accessible home in your area.
Hi! My name is Karen Barbour.
I am a signing Realtor who actively works with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community in the Raleigh, Cary, Durham, Chapel Hill, RTP areas of North Carolina.
I grew up with a sister who was born deaf.
After graduating from college I worked in the Boston Deaf Community for many years.
I am fluent in ASL.
Realtors have an obligation to communicate effectively with their Deaf or Hard of Hearing clients.
When a realtor cannot communicate effectively and accurately with a Deaf or Hard of Hearing client, there is a grave risk of misunderstanding between the client and the other parties, and the risk of a client entering an agreement or contract which he or she does not understand.
Whether you are a senior who has arthritic knees, a child with a physical disability, or even a young mother with a baby on her hip and a grocery bag in her other hand, having a zero step entry makes life easier and safer.
At least one no-step entry to the house either through the front, back, or garage door is recommended.
These handles will make it easier for anyone to open and a door because it doesn't require any grasping or twisting to operate.
Not only will an entryway covering help protect the porch from precipitation, but yourself as well from rain and snow preventing potential slips and falls.
Each day, more and more adults and seniors choose homes in which they can age in place rather than move to a retirement community, an assisted living facility or the home of a family member.
The decision to live in comfort amongst familiar surroundings is a great choice for many.
But does your home have features that can accommodate the aging process?
While we may not require an open floorplan, wider hallways, zero-step entryways and one-level living area today, the future may tell a different story.
