Citrus County and King's Bay are world famous as the "Manatee Capitol of the World".
People flock here from all over the world to experience this one of a kind experience.
There are many local tour guides, boat rentals, and snorkel or dive shops located right on King's Bay in Crystal River.
The mild, 72 degree waters are maintained by a constant flow of millions of gallons of water per day from the deep natural springs.
The manatees migrate into these warm waters during the cooler winter months making it a natural haven where you can swim with the manatee.
The city of Inverness, Florida was originally named Tompkinsville.
Settlement of the area dates back to 1868. A. D. Tompkins, later known as Uncle Alf, started the community.
To attract newcomers to the town, he established mail service and helped erect the first saw mill in the county.
He also gave his brother-in-law, Frank M. Dampier, Sr., a lot to build a store, with Dampier becoming the first merchant in town.
Dampier is credited with laying out the town and naming it Tompkinsville.
Not many years later, the town of Tompkinsville was sold to a firm in Jacksonville and the name was changed to Inverness.
The gem of Florida's beautiful Nature Coast, is about a two hour drive from Tampa/St.
Petersburg.
Because Kings Bay is one of the best places in the world to observe manatees Crystal River is an international destination.
Kings Bay, which has been designated an "Outstanding Florida Waterway, " offers opportunities for boating, diving, swimming, fishing as well as a variety of Manatee and Eco-Tours.
In addition, there are miles of nature trails to hike, bike and observe an abundance of birds, deer, alligators and other wildlife.
In 1851, David Levy Yulee established a 5,000-acre (20 km2) sugar plantation on the Homosassa River, close to the current town of Homosassa.
The plantation was worked by approximately 1,000 slaves, but Yulee was an absentee owner, spending most of his time in Fernandina.
Among the crops raised were sugar cane, cotton and citrus.
The Yulee Groves were one of the first in Florida to grow sweet oranges budded from sour orange stock.
The mill, which was steam-driven, operated from 1851 to 1864 and produced sugar, syrup and molasses, the last of which was part of the rum-making process.
The opulent homes within the Villages of Citrus Hills are available as both traditional single-family homes and detached villas.
The detached villas differ from single-family homes only in that they offer the advantage of being maintenance free.
This difference is reflected in the monthly Homeowners Association (HOA) fees for each type of home.
Citrus Hill's spacious, high-end homes, which range in size from 1,500 to over 4,000 square feet, are designed for luxurious living.
Homeowners will appreciate the open floor plans, graciously sized rooms, high ceilings and artful exteriors.
