My great-great-grandparents came to Cedar Key when they were young, and loved it enough to stay for the duration. I am a fifth-generation lifelong resident of this little island, and a real local, so I know it quite well! I have a good working knowledge of the local codes and FEMA coastal regulations after having served two terms, unopposed, on the Cedar Key City Commission.
During both of those terms, Cedar Key experienced a boom in real estate sales and land development like never seen before--just as the rest of the nation experienced. We commission members found ourselves sitting in multitudes of quasi-judicial hearings, as applicants pushed out to the edges of the development envelope. It was a scary time for our little town, as we heard proposals to tear down historic buildings, and split lots to fit more--more--more!
I'm thankful we made it through with relatively little scarring. I have access to the valuable resource of my husband, Ken, who is a Florida state-licensed general contractor and has been building fine custom homes and doing historic restorations on this island for nearly 35 years.
