Columbus is the second largest city and county seat of Cherokee County, Kansas, United States, located 15 miles south-southwest of Pittsburg, Kansas.
The first settlement was made at Columbus in 1868.
The first post office was established in 1869.
Columbus was a railroad junction for the Saint Louis and San Francisco, and the Missouri, Kansas, and Texas railroads.
The City was named Columbus by A.L. Peters, one of the European-American founders, for his hometown of Columbus, Ohio; the name thus indirectly honors Christopher Columbus, the explorer.
Oswego, the Labette County seat, is located at the intersection of Highways 59/160, on a bluff overlooking the Neosho River Valley.
Oswego was fortunate that a group of pioneer ladies had a vision, and purchased acreage along the bluff that is now Historical Riverside Park, our hidden gem.
Over 80 acres of beautifully landscaped park includes a large public swimming pool, playground equipment, shelter houses, 10,000 s.f.
Recreational opportunities abound in both the City and it's surrounding area.
Altamont began with a single frame building (post office) and a dirt "main street" with approximately 200 citizens.
Through the years, a railroad station, livery stable, blacksmith shops, the town well, and a hotel were added.
Business was conducted mainly on credit, and when a customer paid his bill, he always received a free sack of candy whether it be licorice, hard candy, or cinnamon drops at the local general store.
Church was well attended by residents of Altamont and from the rural area surrounding Altamont.
